An operating system is a critical part of a computer. It's what make a computer useful. You're currently using an operating system to read this. They include Microsoft Windows, Apple OSX, Linux, Chrome OS and more.

The only ones you can use on your self built computer are Windows, Linux and an open source edition of Chrome OS called Chromium. It is illegal to use OSX on a non Apple device.




1. Windows

Windows is the world's most widely used Operating System(OS). It is developed by Microsoft. Windows is closed source and you will need to pay for it. Its most recent version is 8.1.

Do some research as some are upgrade versions.

2. Linux

Linux is an open source OS. There are many versions(distros) that are available the most popular being Ubuntu.

3. Chromium OS

Chromium os is an open source version of Chrome OS which was developed by Google for Chromebooks. Chrome os is easy to use and manage but not as functional as the other two Operating Systems.
